Chemistry is central to all other sciences and involves all forms of life, our planet and the entire universe.

At ��鵺��̳, when you earn your American Chemical Society-approved bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Department of Chemical Sciences, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of chemical principles, as well as develop translatable research, writing and problem-solving skills.

We offer three Bachelor of Science in chemistry degrees, with specializations in environmental chemistry, professional chemistry and biochemistry, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and two minors.

The goal of our renowned faculty is to help you improve in every area, while discovering where chemistry can take you beyond ��鵺��̳. All Bachelor of Chemistry students will have the opportunity to explore chemistry in its many forms, including biochemistry, organic, analytical, environmental, inorganic, physical and computational.

The Department of Chemical Sciences is housed in the $98.5-million Dana Mohler-Faria Science and Math Center, which features three stockrooms, a cold room and three instrument rooms with over $1 million in new upgrades.

Get experience while you learn

At ��鵺��̳, you’ll have a number of summer internship options in chemistry. We award $5,000 summer internships through the Bartlett Summer Internship program, and you can also work in the chemistry department conducting public outreach or tutoring. Many of our Bachelor of Chemistry students also work for local companies either as interns or part-time employees.

Program of study for Bachelor of Chemistry students

We offer two baccalaureate programs: An ACS-approved Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with concentrations in biochemistry, environmental chemistry and professional chemistry, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. The department also offers two minor programs, in biochemistry and chemistry. Students in these tracks will take introductory courses in chemistry in addition to a selection of upper-level classes such as:

I have participated in two paid summer research opportunities — one was at ��鵺��̳, called the Adrian Tinsley Program, and the second was through the National Science Foundation Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology. I’ve continued that work in my Honors thesis, so now I’m working with Dr. Deline and Dr. Brush to develop a new project-based lab that new students will actually get to do themselves in the second semester chemistry course. I even got to test it out and teach it myself, which is something you wouldn’t get to do at any other university.

Whether you earn a Bachelor of Science in chemistry or your Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, you’ll have a lot of career choices upon graduation.
